Visit Notifications

Get an email when someone visits a page you care about: read receipts for web pages. Know when a client opens your proposal or a new page starts getting visits.

Visit Notifications emails you when someone visits a page, post, category or custom post type you’ve chosen. Think of it as read receipts for web pages.

  • Know when a client opens the proposal or preview page you sent them
  • See when a newly launched page starts getting visits
  • Keep a record of visits in your inbox, which is easy to check on the go

Each notification includes the time of the visit, the visitor’s browser, where they came from, an anonymised IP address, and their approximate location and time zone.

How to use it

  1. Install and activate Visit Notifications from Plugins → Add New.
  2. Choose the defaults under Settings → Visit Notifications: whether logged-in users should trigger notifications, and whether to ignore search engine bots (they’re ignored by default).
  3. Switch it on for a page: edit the page or post, find the Visit Notifications panel in the sidebar, turn it on and update the page.
  4. Choose how often to be emailed: straight away, or as an hourly or daily summary for busier pages.

Questions

Where are the emails sent?

To the site’s administration email address, set under Settings → General.

I’m not getting any emails.

Check notifications are switched on for that page, that you visited it while logged out (if logged-in visits are excluded), and that your site can send email at all. Many hosts need an SMTP plugin for reliable email.

Is it suitable for busy sites?

It’s designed for keeping an eye on specific pages rather than whole busy sites. For pages with lots of visits, use the hourly or daily summary.

What about privacy?

IP addresses are anonymised before they’re emailed. If you use it on public pages, mention it in your privacy notice.
